A few years ago, I was visiting Canada’s East Coast, and one morning, I found myself up early, just as the day was starting. The air was cool, and there was this quiet stillness that felt calming. I was walking along a country road, and what really caught me off guard were the lupines. I hadn’t really noticed them before, probably because we don’t have many where I live. But out there, they were everywhere—growing wild along the ditches, in different colours, spreading out like a natural carpet across the land.
I remember being struck by how alive the landscape felt because of those flowers. It wasn’t just the sight of them—it was how they added this unexpected pop of colour to an already peaceful morning. I kept thinking about that feeling, and that’s what led me to create At First Light.
Back in the studio, I wanted to paint what that morning felt like—the calm air, the soft light, the way those flowers seemed to appear out of nowhere and suddenly be everywhere. I didn’t just want to recreate the scene, but to capture the mix of surprise and calm that made that morning so memorable.
This painting is more than just a spring scene for me—it’s a reminder of how certain moments can catch you off guard and stay with you. How a simple drive or a quiet walk can turn into a memory because something unexpected, like a burst of lupines along the road, catches your eye.
For me, At First Light brings me back to that peaceful morning and that surprise of seeing the land so full of life. It’s my way of sharing that experience—of bringing a little bit of that memory and feeling into the studio, and hopefully into your home too.
